Flexible self-pay options
Using HSA or FSA funds for nutrition counseling
HSA and FSA cards are accepted only for eligible independent self-pay nutrition services. They are not accepted for appointments billed through insurance, Fay, or Berry Street. Your plan administrator makes the final eligibility decision, and documentation may be required.
The key eligibility rule
When may nutrition counseling qualify?
IRS guidance states that nutritional counseling may be paid or reimbursed with HSA or FSA funds when it treats a specific disease diagnosed by a physician. Examples include obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Counseling for general health alone ordinarily does not qualify.
✓Medical nutrition therapy for a physician-diagnosed condition
✓Nutrition counseling related to obesity or diabetes
✓Weight-management treatment for hypertension or heart disease
✓Eligible copays, deductibles, or self-pay nutrition visits not reimbursed elsewhere
Usually not eligible
—General wellness or healthy-eating coaching without a diagnosed condition
—Ordinary groceries, meal-prep supplies, or kitchen tools
—Retail products or general educational resources
—Most supplements unless recommended to treat a diagnosed condition
